Weekly Roundup: March 8th

Hello and welcome to the weekly roundup where each Sunday we look back at some of the news items making the headlines over the past seven days.

On Monday it was reported that an electrician caught with cannabis by gardai went straight out to a dealer and bought more of the drug, a court heard

On Tuesday it emerged that one person per day dies from a drug overdose according to Merchants Quay Ireland

On Tuesday it was reported that a man caught with 10 kg of cannabis has been sentenced to five and a half years in prison

On Wednesday it emerged that Garda had arrested a man in Cork following the seizure of 7kg of cannabis resin

On Thursday it emerged that a 15 year old is involved with drug dealing in Clare

On Thursday it emerged that crowd funding is underway to give the world the first ever images of the brain on LSD

On Thursday an article raising concerns around Skunk was published on TheJournal.ie

On Friday it was reported that a man who held over €27,000 worth of cannabis to pay off a debt has been sentenced to five years

On Friday it emerged that a one-armed golfer was caught with €20 worth of cannabis in a DVD case

On Friday a number of news outlets covered the cannabis referendum result in NUIG. There were articles on the Irish Times, on UTV Ireland, on Joe.ie and also on Breakingnews.ie

On Friday a poll asking is it time to legalise cannabis appeared on TheJournal.ie

On Friday it emerged that a Lithuanian man was jailed for 18 months and ordered to leave the country then for having a growhouse worth €80,000

 

Activism:

It was a big week for NUIG SSDP and other activists with NUIG giving its Student Union a mandate to support cannabis legalisation after a 69% yes vote in a referendum

There were two articles this week.The first looked at the Yes vote in the NUIG student referendum on cannabis legalisation. The second article looked at the potential revenue that could be raised from regulated cannabis
